What Is Biodiesel

SoyBeans
Biodiesel is simply a fuel that can be run like diesel but is organic, or not refined from raw crude oil.

So what is diesel? I don’t want to get too technical on the subject. There are two great articles that explain how gas engines work, and how diesel engines work:

Gas Engine: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine.htm
Diesel Engine: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/diesel.htm

To sum it up, gas engines need a source to ignite the fuel in order for the gas to do work. That is usually in the form of a spark plug. Diesel engines need no spark to work. By simply compressing the air and fuel diesel does work. The work in both is transferred to the motion of your car. [Read more →]

Stuff Stuff Everywhere

What can you truly live without?

We are diligently cleaning out our attic, and closets preparing for moving out of our 1150 square foot townhouse and living in our 40-45 foot boat. What I find incredible is that we just have way too much stuff.

I am a pack rat. There I said it. I have too much stuff, and most of it I do not need. I have been saying for years that I need to get rid of a whole bunch of stuff but I have yet to do so. Now with this trip coming up I know that I need to get rid of stuff.

I would not get rid of things because they were sentimental, or they meant something to me. Now I go through stuff and I can’t even remember what I have them for. Some stuff I don’t even know how or where I got it from. I find that a lot of the stuff I have is stuff that is significant in some way in my life. They once meant something to me. A lot are mementos of past experiences, I have some sports memorabilia, I have tons of golf equipment, some old computer stuff. And I mean really old computer stuff. So old it is not compatible anymore. Do I really need this stuff?

So what to throw away and what to recycle and what to sell and what to give away, it is all really daunting. I have sold some stuff on eBay already. We have given some stuff away, I have a lot of papers to get rid of, many boxes, and some books that I really don’t know what to do with. The whole point of the ramble is that I just have too much stuff.

Why do we really need the stuff? Do they really hold that much sentimental value? Are they really that valuable? Do they hold any value at all?

What really is important are your own memories and experiences. If you are living life just to get stuff, what is it that you will really have in the end? A bunch of stuff?

The same goes with work. I am very anti-job right now. By job I mean a place that you have to go to on a rigorous schedule, and you get paid to do something that you really don’t want to do or don’t care to do. What are you left with? A pension that gets smaller and smaller due to inflation? A retirement party? A gold watch? And what do you do when you are older? I know that many people live long full lives after they retire. But I don’t want to wait until then.

I want experiences now, I want to live now. I don’t want to spend my time in an office, or classroom, or anywhere else and hope that I have enough to live off of when I retire. So it is time to reduce. Time to live simpler. Time to begin my life.

Wow begin my life when I am 34. That just seems so old to me. To others I know that it may seem young. But it is time to act, and time to start.

Can’t do it yourself, but you yearn for a life of freedom and non responsibility? We will have some opportunities that you can have to live life with us and through us. Come join the fun. Subscribe to our site and get the latest information.

What is Green?

What does it mean to be green? Is there really a green movement? Sometimes I start a conversation about making money on the Internet and changing my lifestyle to be more green and environmentally sensitive and I get blank looks and stares. My friends, family, and people around me just don’t get it. So is this Web 2.0 movement, and this green movement real? Yes, but it is just beginning.

One of the most important things that we are trying to accomplish in our travels is to show people that being green can be done in both an everyday living situation, and on vacation. We just happen to be living everyday as a vacation. But that is a different story.

So how can people living everyday lives be green? The three basic steps to a clean environment are Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

REDUCE Heat, and Increase the Air

In the winter if you decrease the settings on your thermometer in your house by just 1% it can save 5% in energy usage, and that usage translates directly into money saved. That is a win win situation. In the summer use fans even with the air on. Fans are much less costly to run than an air conditioning unit, and it can actually make you feel cooler. Increasing the temperature of your thermostat in the summer by 1% can save you up to 8% in energy consumption and again that translates into savings.

REUSE

It is not all about recycling items; it is just as important to reuse items and it will save you money! What do you do with all your empty water bottles? Recycle them, great but what about getting a water filter filling them all back up and keeping them in the refrigerator for the next time you are thirsty. You can do the same with sandwich baggies. Where is the rule written that you have to use baggies only one time? Have fun with being environmentally conscious. Make it a competition for your family to see who can reuse the same item the most (no prize necessary).

RECYCLE

It does work. There are many things out there that can be recycled. Your daily newspaper can easily be recycled. All those cereal boxes. Cans are an easy recycle. If you do not have a deposit in your state on beer and soda, then recycle those bottles and cans. Here in Nashville we have very limited recycling pick-up, but almost every city has a recycling drop off area. It only takes a few minutes to go and drop your recyclable items off.

Be Active

This is such a benefit and it is so underutilized. Becoming active increases your lifespan, decreases STRESS, makes you look better, and gives you more energy. But it also conserves energy usage. If you are outside on a walk, or at a park, or heck just cleaning up the yard, you are saving money. Most of us today listen to the radio, watch tv, have lights on, or are doing something that is consuming energy while they are indoors. You just don’t need that stuff when you are outside.

Be Conscious

Set your mind to work. Make a decision to conserve and be nice to mother nature. Your brain and your body will find ways of doing so. Your mind is very powerful. Use it, it will thank you.

We do our best to conserve energy, and recycle. We do on occasion throw something out that can be recycled, and we do on occasion leave too many lights on, but because we are making a conscious effort and most of the time we catch ourselves and turn those lights off.

Be green, stay fit, and live life.

A Technical Update

Hi everyone. This being my first entry to this blog I wanted to give you an idea of what I am doing, and a little description of myself. We will be redeveloping the About us page, and we will be tweaking the site here and there until we are completely satisfied with it. So expect that it will always be changing. I will be running the technical side of Trekking Around. I do all things related to the Internet, and yes this is my design based off of the free spotlight design on WordPress themes. Any questions pertaining to the site and any sponsorship questions for the site should come directly to me. I will do my best to answer any and all questions.

As far as the boat search we have learned a lot since we started looking. We have come to the conclusion that we would like either a Trawler or a Cruiser. Both of which will give is the room that we desire. We do not need a lot. We have found that there is a significantA Cruiser difference between a 35 foot boat and a 40 foot boat. The extra 5 feet in most cases gives so much more room. We will probably end up with a 38-42 foot boat. That seems to be the class that gives us the room we need at the price that we want.

As far as the difference between a trawler and a cruiser,  the difference that I see is in the hull design. A TrawlerA trawler has a deeper more bulbous hull that pushes through the water. A cruiser rides more on the top of the water and cuts through waves. A trawler seems more stable in rough conditions than a cruiser but is much slower. Since we are not in a hurry speed is not a concern. Trawlers also are much more efficient for traveling the Great Loop. In reality a trawler will be the best class boat for us since it is the most economical under running conditions, and we are not concerned with speed.

To me the most important thing to the boat will be the engine. We are going to convert the engine from diesel to BioDiesel. This is very important to us as we would like to prove that it is economical and an easy thing to do to help the environment. So a diesel engine is very important to the boat. We will not even look at a boat if it is not diesel.

I do not consider myself an environmentalist, although I am concerned about the environment. What I am concerned about is our dependence on oil. There are a lot of better alternatives to burning oil and we hope to raise awareness of it. It is not that much of a big deal to change. We as a people, as leaders of the world, have to be the ones to go a head and do this. It has always been a big part of the US to be innovators of change. We seem very stuck in our ways right now. But we don’t have to be. Lets change and make the world a better place. “This service announcement brought to you by Coach Kip, and now back to your regularly scheduled program” (in my best radio voice).

I will be researching the benefits of Biofuel and more specifically BioDiesel. I will be putting my past experience as an engineer, and my education as a physicist and a mathematician to practice along the way. Having a scientific experiment that runs through the course of normal operating conditions for over a year and more than 5000 miles is very important to the development, use, and understanding of Biofuel. And it will be great fun along the way.

If you have any information about Biofuel or BioDiesel especially in marine applications let us know. Any and all information is useful and will be much appreciated.

Welcome to Trekking Around

Welcome to Trekking Around! We are proud to introduce our blog and website to promote the love of living.

We are two young Location Independent Professionals on a journey around the Great Loop of North America by boat.

There are a few things that you will see throughout this blog, and as the site is developed.

We are a couple who love life.
Karen has always known how to live free and independent. It is in her soul. She has a pirate heart with butterfly wings. Life surrounds her and she embraces it. She embraces all of it, every little twist, turn, adventure, and journey that comes along.
Bryan is a technician and a self proclaimed geek who actually likes math and science. But he is also a dreamer and a roamer. He loves change and new adventures. He embraces new challenges and dives into them head first and learns everything that there is to know about it.

We are a couple who have come to know the power of belief, believing in ourselves and our dreams.
Bryan’s other site Coach Kip is developing into a great personal development and leadership site. His basic premise is — Conceive It, Believe It, Achieve It — a mantra learned from his High School Football Coach. He has traveled a long way through self-discovery and is an expert at reinventing himself. The key: Believing that you can do it.
Karen has always known that she is the one who controls her destiny. Belief is what drives her. She believes in her goals. She believes in her life. She believes in her adventures. That belief makes life fun for her and all those in contact with her. You will soon be able to visit Karen’s website, TheLoveofLiving.com.

Together they have decided to

Live Right:
In working hard and barely paying bills both came to realize something that needed to be realized a long time ago. Focus on the important things. The most important thing to Karen and Bryan is time. They love to be together. They love adventures. They love to do what they chose to do. In order to do what they wanted they realized that they needed to adjust their lives so that they would be able to get that time back. What they discovered is something that is very simple, less stuff equals more time to enjoy life and live their dreams.

Go Green:
In their discovery of what they really want they found that they both love the outdoors. It sickens both to take a nice nature walk and find trash littering the trails. It is appalling to see a film of oil on a reservoir that serves drinking water to millions. So what to do? Karen and Bryan have always done their part in recycling, and trying to be good about reducing waste. They both are concerned about the environment around them. Why? They live in it! In doing the research on the boat and the Great Loop they both decided to live right. With less stuff, focus on the important stuff, and be GREEN. So in their journey the couple has decided to live life as green as possible. This means that they will procure a boat with a diesel engine and convert it to run as much Biofuel as possible. It is something that is rarely done, and it needs to be brought to the public’s attention. Biofuel, clean living, reducing waste, is not only possible but easy with some very subtle life changes. There are lots of possibilities and we hope that you can all help us with finding new ways to live clean and green.

To sum it up, Karen and Bryan are going to travel the Great Loop of North America on a Green boat. Living life to the fullest, meeting new people, and enjoying the time that they have together. All the while, an undying belief in what they set out to accomplish will drive them forward.

Enjoy our journey. There will be plenty of opportunities to join us, both virtually and personally along the way. We hope to see you along our journey.
