Stuff Stuff Everywhere
What can you truly live without?
We are diligently cleaning out our attic, and closets preparing for moving out of our 1150 square foot townhouse and living in our 40-45 foot boat. What I find incredible is that we just have way too much stuff.
I am a pack rat. There I said it. I have too much stuff, and most of it I do not need. I have been saying for years that I need to get rid of a whole bunch of stuff but I have yet to do so. Now with this trip coming up I know that I need to get rid of stuff.
I would not get rid of things because they were sentimental, or they meant something to me. Now I go through stuff and I can’t even remember what I have them for. Some stuff I don’t even know how or where I got it from. I find that a lot of the stuff I have is stuff that is significant in some way in my life. They once meant something to me. A lot are mementos of past experiences, I have some sports memorabilia, I have tons of golf equipment, some old computer stuff. And I mean really old computer stuff. So old it is not compatible anymore. Do I really need this stuff?
So what to throw away and what to recycle and what to sell and what to give away, it is all really daunting. I have sold some stuff on eBay already. We have given some stuff away, I have a lot of papers to get rid of, many boxes, and some books that I really don’t know what to do with. The whole point of the ramble is that I just have too much stuff.
Why do we really need the stuff? Do they really hold that much sentimental value? Are they really that valuable? Do they hold any value at all?
What really is important are your own memories and experiences. If you are living life just to get stuff, what is it that you will really have in the end? A bunch of stuff?
The same goes with work. I am very anti-job right now. By job I mean a place that you have to go to on a rigorous schedule, and you get paid to do something that you really don’t want to do or don’t care to do. What are you left with? A pension that gets smaller and smaller due to inflation? A retirement party? A gold watch? And what do you do when you are older? I know that many people live long full lives after they retire. But I don’t want to wait until then.
I want experiences now, I want to live now. I don’t want to spend my time in an office, or classroom, or anywhere else and hope that I have enough to live off of when I retire. So it is time to reduce. Time to live simpler. Time to begin my life.
Wow begin my life when I am 34. That just seems so old to me. To others I know that it may seem young. But it is time to act, and time to start.
