Free Money in your House

Upside Down HouseWhat is in your attic, basement, or garage that you don’t need any more? More importantly why are you holding on to it?We have sold almost a $1000 dollars in just one month! Most of the sales were items that we either forgot we owned or could not figure out the reason for holding on to the item. You will be quite amazed at what you have laying around the house that you didn’t even know existed.

WHAT TO KEEP:

  1. Determine who is behind the memory
Make sure you can feel the love when you decide to keep something. For example, why keep an old wedding dress to a man you have divorced? Sure it may have been a great memory at the time but is it still, do you really wish to revisit all the turmoil each time you take out the dress?
  1. Determine what memories the item holds
Most times people collect items from a loved one who has passed on. This is extremely important especially when the items are photos or an item that makes you feel as if you have traveled back in time and the person is there with you. All too often we keep and “old broken lamp” that has no significance. Just because a loved one owned it does not mean they wanted you to keep it for the rest of your life collecting dust.
  1. Determine when you used the item last and when you plan to use it again
It is lots of fun to go through old boxes and find toys you had when you were young. Select 3-5 items that are most special to you that maybe you would like to pass on to your children and then sell the rest. Trust me your children and/or grandchildren will not be interested in lots of old junk they may enjoy few key items that you can use with them and it will mean so much more.
  1. Determine where you can store the items
If you cannot even walk into your basement, attic, garage, or spare room you have too much stuff. If you have to rent storage units just to house your old junk you have too much stuff. Your keepsakes should fit comfortably in your storage areas without risk of injury when you try to enter the room. The better you can organize and label your items the better you can share and use these items.
  1. Determine why you are keeping the item
As previously stated, only keep items that create special memories with you.
    **Use the one box rule:
  • Limit yourself to one box per family member
  • Limit yourself to one box per time frame of your life (for example, one sports box, one college box, one travel box)
  • Limit yourself to one box per type of item (for example one for newspaper and magazine clippings, one for mementoes collected while traveling, one for items that hold some sort of significance to you)
